Collecting Baseball Cards - Fun or Business?

Rookie Card or Veteran Baseball Card?

Collecting baseball cards has been popular since the 1870's! Yes that's right! Companies used the popularity of the famous baseball players to sell their own products. Almost all baseball cards contain some kind of advertisement. Some of these cards are given away for free. Such cards have promoted the sale of almost everything from cheese to under wears throughout these many years. But nowadays the cards themselves have become so popular that they are sold alone.

Baseball cards come in all shapes, designs and sizes. Collecting baseball cards, like comic collection is a very interesting hobby. They can be found in the size of a stamp or of a poster. Most of them are rectangular but they can even be round or triangular. They can contain special foils or finished to give a prism like effect or they can be printed using the primitive techniques. The cards are usually made up of plastics, metals leather or cloth or some other material.

What to collect depends totally on the choice of the collector himself. A theme or taste usually guides him. Some collectors collect cards belonging to a specific era or of some favorite player or a favorite team. Some, on the other hand, collect only unusual or rare cards. Some collect errors or variations. Some go for first issues. Others choose cards related to their hometown or their school.

The most common mistakes made by amateur collectors is overestimating the value or not knowing how conditions affect the price. It is the easy way that the higher the demand of the card and the rarer it is the higher will the price be of it. What determines the demand of the card is nothing specific. It might be the age of the card, it's attractiveness, popularity of the issue, who is depicted on the card, condition of the card and of course the scarcity of the card.

The 1st baseball cards were made by tobacco companies and distributed in cigarette packs to entice boys to buy cigarettes. Honus Wagner was a pretty good baseball player, but he detested being marketed by cigarette companies, so he demanded that his baseball cards be remove from distribution. As a result, the Honus Wagner baseball card became one of the most valuable baseball cards in the history of baseball card collecting.

Remember, the laws of economics - scarcity increases value and drives up the price.

Baseball Card Value

Buying a price guide before starting off to buy cards themselves is a very reasonable thing to do. It will not only give the collector an idea of the price ranges but also make him know of the various types of cards and how to identify them. There are both abridged and specialized versions available and having both of these books will certainly help.

A collector should know the difference between a vintage card and a recent reprint. The reprints are not for those who collect the expensive originals.

You can buy cards from local stores or the card shows or through a mail catalogue or even online. Another option is buying through auctions. You need to choose your own option. Card stores can be much more expensive than the rest. At card shows oftentimes a famous player comes up to sign autographs and so this is a huge plus point for a collector!

Taking care of your cards is also essential in order to restore their value. An accidental crease can lower the cards value to a great deal. So be careful about the collection. Collecting baseball cards is indeed a very enjoyable hobby to pursue.
